God’s All Sufficient Grace

Have you ever had a week that was filled with hospitals?  This week for us at New Faith has been one of those weeks.  One of our graduates had just been discharged from a local hospital after a failed surgery attempt to address a newly diagnosed lung cancer.  Unfortunately, she found herself back in Intensive Care with an internal bleeding issue.  Another programmer prepared for an elective surgery to address a longstanding health problem in a different hospital.  All of this created a change in routine and scheduling for the staff as together we planned daily hospital visits and heard daily reports that included words like: antibiotics, infection, blood transfusion, edema, hypertension, ICU, pain meds, pre-op, post-op, radiation, hematoma, cysts, bleeding and the list goes on and on.

The amazing thing about this week and all of the schedule changes that it has caused is that both of the women who are in different hospitals for different reasons, have committed their way and their hearts to the Great Physician.  Most of us find hospitalizations, regardless of the reason for them, to be somewhat stressful to say the least.  Health issues are common among those who are recovering from various addictions and the fear of the impending outcome of procedures and diagnostics can produce amazing stressors in the best of us.  I was deeply impacted spiritually as I sat across from one of these women who was once again connected to all kinds of tubes and equipment clearly say to me… “It’s OK, I’m OK, I am in His hands.”  Her surgeon came to her bedside and saw the cross that was around her neck and picked it up in his hands and said the same thing to her, “You are a medical mystery to me but I know that you are in His hands,” to which she replied, “Yes, I know that I am.”

As the days have passed this week, I am happy to report that both of these women are improving.  One is back on campus post-operatively and well on her way to a full recovery and the other has moved out of ICU and is anticipating a discharge from the hospital very soon.  Both ladies are the recipients of God’s grace at their time of weakness and have seen His power perfected in them.  The best part is that they know it and boldly testify of it. They both came to us empty and are now spiritually full regardless of the circumstances that they are going through.  Hallelujah!  What a Savior!  His grace, in the presence of our weakness, is all sufficient.

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you and my power is made perfect in weakness.”  Therefore I boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
